Benefits of Choosing an Orthodontic Specialist

Do you know the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist? They are both important professionals in the dental field. However, while all orthodontists are dentists, not all dentists are orthodontists. Some dentists are certified to practice orthodontics, but there are benefits to choosing an orthodontic specialist to straighten your teeth.

The first benefit is training.

Orthodontists and dentists both go to dental school after they graduate with their bachelor’s degree. However, as an orthodontist, Dr. Cameron Jolley has completed an additional residency program specializing in orthodontic studies that lasts 2 to 3 years. During these additional studies, the primary focus is the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the teeth and jaws that are incorrectly positioned, or misaligned. Dentists do not receive this extra training.

In addition, orthodontists have the option to become Board Certified. A board-certified orthodontist, like Dr. Cameron Jolley, is an orthodontist who has completed an extra set of requirements and gone above and beyond to demonstrate their judgment, skills and knowledge to their orthodontic peers in order to provide the highest level of care possible to each patient. A board-certified orthodontist has chosen to complete countless additional hours beyond their general orthodontic education and training to obtain their certification. Only 1 in 3 orthodontists are board certified!

The second benefit is specialization.

Dentists specialize in the health of the teeth and gums as well as treatment of any problems associated with those areas while orthodontists specialize in the position of the teeth and jaws and any problems associated with those areas. Although similar, the focuses of each doctor are different. This is why it is still important to see your dentist for cleanings and checkups while under the care of an orthodontist!

The third benefit is experience.

Orthodontists work with very complex cases and provide unique treatment plans to each of their patients. They must take yearly training to make sure they are up to date on the latest technology and treatment concepts. You can trust in the fact that an orthodontist has been exposed to the best treatment plan for you!
