Can You Be Too Old for Braces?

Many people think only of teenagers or even younger children when they think of braces. We get it. It is a pretty accurate assumption that a lot of our patients are kids, but there is a good chance you underestimate the number of adults in treatment. You may think that a person can be “too old” for braces, but that is not the case!

Reasons for Adult Braces

There are lots of good reasons that an adult may choose to seek out orthodontic treatment. The first is that they want a more aesthetically pleasing look for their smile. We see patients who never had braces, but have always been self-conscious about their smiles. We also see patients who had braces as kids, but their teeth have shifted over time. No matter the reason that a person is uncomfortable with the appearance of their smile, Dr. Jolley can help give you the smile of your dreams!

The second reason that an adult may need orthodontic treatment or braces is to correct a dental problem or concern. Teeth can shift over time and that may affect their bite (or the way their top and bottom teeth fit together when they close their mouth). Problems with a misaligned bite can cause teeth to wear down unevenly in spots, may lead to more tooth decay, or cause oral or facial pain. This is just one example of a common dental concern that an adult might find relief from through the help of braces.

Benefits of Adult Braces

One of the most satisfying parts of helping an adult along their orthodontic journey is seeing their satisfaction with the finished product. How we feel about our appearance matters and can affect our daily lives. Adults who are uncomfortable with the smile may have spent years dealing with this insecurity. Braces offer a bright, beautiful smile that can increase self-confidence and improve a person’s daily life. It's time to have the smile you’ve always deserved!

Adult braces can also improve your dental health. Whether you have a dental issue as we discussed above or not, the straightening of teeth has benefits for everyone. By moving your teeth into their ideal placement, it is easier to thoroughly clean each tooth - which leads to fewer cavities and decay. Straighter teeth can also relieve pressure in the mouth that can lead to headaches or jaw pain.

Adult Braces Options

If you are worried about your appearance of as an adult, you are not alone. Probably the most common concern we hear about adult braces is how the wearer will look during treatment. Fortunately, there are many options that are subtle and even virtually invisible.

  • Invisalign®- This treatment works through a series of flexible, clear plastic trays that gradually move your teeth by applying gentle pressure. Invisalign® trays are so subtle that many people won’t even be able to tell you are wearing them.

  • Clear Ceramic Braces - These braces work the same way that traditional braces do, through a series of brackets and wires. The difference is that the materials used are designed to blend in with your natural teeth and appear as un-detectable as possible.

  • Incognito Braces - These braces also work similarly to traditional braces, but instead of the brackets being on the fronts of your teeth, they’re fixed to the back, so no one sees them.

  • Traditional Braces - Traditional braces are still an amazing treatment for people who are ready to perfect their smile and are often the most efficient treatment option. Treatment times are getting shorter and shorter due to advances in technology.
