At Jolley Orthodontics in Trophy Club, Texas, many patients wonder if orthodontic treatment is just cosmetic. The truth is, straight teeth do much more than enhance your smile—they play a key role in your overall health. Whether you’re considering Invisalign in Trophy Club, traditional braces, or early orthodontic care, properly aligned teeth can improve both your oral health and daily function.
We proudly serve patients in Trophy Club, Southlake, Westlake, and Roanoke, providing customized orthodontic solutions for kids, teens, and adults.
Improve Oral Health with Straight Teeth
Straight teeth are easier to clean, which helps reduce plaque buildup and harmful bacteria. Patients who choose orthodontic treatment in Trophy Club, TX often experience healthier gums and fewer cavities.
When teeth are crowded or misaligned, it’s harder to brush and floss effectively. With treatments like clear aligners in Trophy Club or braces, you can improve your oral hygiene and lower your risk of gum disease.
Better Bite, Better Function
A properly aligned bite improves how your teeth come together when you chew and speak. Many patients seeking Invisalign near Southlake or Westlake are surprised to learn how much orthodontic treatment improves everyday comfort.
Benefits of a corrected bite include:

More efficient chewing
Clearer speech
Reduced jaw strain and discomfort
Less wear and tear on teeth

At Jolley Orthodontics, we focus on creating a balanced bite that supports long-term dental health.
Prevent Costly Dental Problems
Choosing braces or Invisalign in Trophy Club, TX is an investment in preventative care. Straight teeth help reduce the risk of:

Tooth decay and cavities
Gum disease
Enamel wear from uneven pressure
Jaw pain and TMJ-related issues

Patients from Southlake, Westlake, and surrounding areas trust Jolley Orthodontics to help them avoid more serious dental problems down the road.
Boost Confidence and Overall Wellness

While the health benefits are essential, a straight smile also boosts confidence. Feeling good about your smile can positively impact your personal, social, and professional life.
Our team at Jolley Orthodontics creates personalized treatment plans using the latest technology in Invisalign and braces in Trophy Club to help you achieve a smile you love.

Is Invisalign as effective as braces? For many patients, Invisalign in Trophy Club is just as effective as braces, depending on the complexity of the case.
At what age should you see an orthodontist? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children see an orthodontist by age 7, but treatment is available for all ages.

How Do I Know If My Child Needs Braces?

Common Questions Parents Ask

Parents often wonder: “How do I know if my child needs braces?” The answer isn’t always obvious, and that’s okay. Orthodontic needs develop gradually, and many issues are easiest to identify early.
Below, Board Certified Orthodontist Dr. Jolley answers some of the most common questions parents ask when deciding if their child needs braces.
How do I know if my child needs braces?
The most reliable way to know if your child needs braces is to schedule an orthodontic evaluation with our team. While parents may notice crowding or bite issues, some orthodontic problems are not visible without professional assessment.
During your child’s initial assessment, Dr. Jolley will evaluate how your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite are developing and determines whether treatment is needed now, later, or not at all.
What are the signs that my child may need braces?
Common signs that may indicate your child could need braces include:

Crowded, overlapping, or crooked teeth.
Gaps between teeth.
Upper teeth that stick out too far (overbite).
Lower teeth that sit in front of the upper teeth (underbite).
Teeth that don’t touch when biting down (open bite).
Difficulty chewing or biting.
Jaw shifting, clicking, or uneven wear on teeth.

These signs often point to a malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth or jaws.
What is a malocclusion?
A malocclusion occurs when the teeth or jaws do not line up properly. This can affect:

Chewing and speech
Long-term tooth wear
Jaw development
Overall oral health

Malocclusions are one of the most common reasons children need orthodontic treatment, including braces or Invisalign.
At what age should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist by age 7.
This early visit does not always mean braces will begin right away. Instead, it allows an orthodontist to:

Monitor jaw growth.
Identify developing bite issues.
Determine the ideal timing for treatment.

Early evaluations often lead to simpler, more effective treatment later.

Does my child need a referral from a pediatric dentist?
No referral is required to see an orthodontist. That said, many children are referred by their pediatric dentist after bite or alignment concerns are noticed during routine dental visits. Parents can also schedule an orthodontic evaluation directly if they have concerns or want peace of mind.
If my child needs braces, will treatment start right away?
Not always. Many children are placed under orthodontic observation after their first evaluation. This means:

Your child’s growth is monitored over time.
Treatment begins at the most effective stage.
Braces are placed only when they will provide the best results.

Starting at the right time often shortens treatment and improves outcomes.

What happens during a child’s orthodontic evaluation?
A child’s orthodontic evaluation is comfortable and informative. It typically includes:

A visual exam of teeth and bite
Digital scans or X-rays (if needed)
A personalized explanation of findings
Clear guidance on next steps

Parents leave knowing whether braces are needed and when treatment should begin.
What if I’m not sure my child has orthodontic issues?
Many orthodontic concerns aren’t obvious, even to the most attentive parents. That’s why early evaluations are recommended.
If you’re asking, “How do I know if my child needs braces?”, scheduling an orthodontic evaluation is the best first step.

Wearing your retainer after braces or aligners is the key to keeping your smile straight and healthy. But what happens if you go to put it in… and it just won’t fit? Whether it feels too tight, won’t go on all the way, or is uncomfortable, here’s what to do when your retainer doesn’t fit:

1. Don’t Force It
If your retainer doesn’t slide on easily, don’t push it into place. Forcing a retainer that doesn’t fit can damage the appliance or put too much pressure on your teeth, causing discomfort or even injury.
2. Ask Yourself: How Long Has It Been?
If you’ve skipped wearing your retainer for even a few days, your teeth may have started to shift. The longer it’s been, the more likely your retainer will feel tight or not fit at all.
3. Check for Damage
Look closely for cracks, warping, or other signs of wear, especially if your retainer has been exposed to hot water, left in a hot car, or chewed on. A damaged retainer can’t hold your teeth in the right position.
4. Contact Your Orthodontist Right Away
If your retainer doesn’t fit, us as soon as possible. The sooner we see you, the better chance we have of getting your teeth back on track without more complex treatment. We’ll check your teeth, determine why the retainer isn’t fitting, and talk about your best options, either adjusting your current retainer or making a new one.
5. Prevent Future Problems

Wear your retainer as directed, usually full-time right after braces, then nightly as instructed by your orthodontist.

Store it in its case when not in use.

Keep it away from heat, pets, and anything that could damage it.

Clean it regularly with cool water and a soft toothbrush.

Why Retainers Matters
Your teeth naturally shift over time, especially in the months right after orthodontic treatment. Wearing your retainer correctly will help protect the investment you made in your smile.
If your retainer isn’t fitting quite right, don’t wait, contact Jolly Orthodontics today. Under the expert care of Dr. Cameron Jolley, our Board-Certified Orthodontist, you’ll back on track quickly and comfortably.

What is an Orthodontic Observation Appointment?

If your child has had an initial consultation with Dr. Jolley and has been recommended for an observation visit, you might be wondering—what exactly does that mean? An orthodontic observation appointment is a crucial step in planning for future orthodontic treatment. It allows us to monitor your child's dental development and determine the perfect time to start treatment for the best possible results.

Why Are Observation Visits Important?
Some kids need orthodontic treatment, but not right away. An observation visit is scheduled when we know a child will need braces or other early orthodontic care but need to wait for the optimal time to begin. This could be due to baby teeth that still need to fall out, adult teeth that haven’t fully erupted, or jaw growth that is still in progress.

Regular observation appointments help ensure that when the time is right, treatment can begin efficiently and effectively. By monitoring changes in your child's teeth and jaw over time, Dr. Jolley can provide personalized recommendations and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

What Happens During an Observation Visit?
At an observation appointment, Dr. Jolley will:

Check the progress of baby tooth loss and adult tooth eruption.
Assess jaw growth and development.
Take updated X-rays or photos if needed.
Provide guidance on oral habits that may impact tooth alignment.
Determine when your child is ready to begin orthodontic treatment.

These visits are typically quick and easy, with no treatment or payment necessary at the time. They help parents and kids feel informed and prepared for the next steps when the time comes.

How Often Does My Child Need an Observation Visit?
Most observation patients visit us every 6 to 12 months. The frequency of these visits depends on how quickly your child’s teeth and jaw are developing. Keeping up with these appointments ensures that treatment begins at the ideal time, reducing the length and complexity of orthodontic care in the future.

The Benefits of Observation Visits

Early Detection: Spotting potential orthodontic issues early can help prevent more significant problems later.
Less Invasive Treatment: Monitoring growth allows Dr. Jolley to time treatment strategically, which may reduce the need for extractions or more complex procedures.
Cost-Effective: Starting treatment at the right time can mean shorter treatment durations and potentially lower costs.
Peace of Mind: Regular check-ins help parents and kids feel confident and prepared for the orthodontic journey ahead.

At Jolley Orthodontics, we believe that everyone deserves a confident smile and we understand that the cost of braces or Invisalign® can be a significant investment. Fortunately, dental insurance often helps with orthodontic costs and we’re here to guide you through what to expect with insurance coverage, how Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) can be used, and the options we provide to make orthodontic treatment affordable and accessible.
Insurance Coverage for Braces and Invisalign
Dental insurance often covers a portion of orthodontic treatment, but the level of coverage varies based on your specific plan. Each insurance provider approaches orthodontics differently, with coverage dependent on the type of treatment, age of the patient, and specific plan details. Here’s what you need to know:

Coverage Differences: Some plans may cover a percentage of the cost, while others provide a fixed benefit amount. Additionally, certain plans set a lifetime maximum for orthodontic coverage, meaning they may cover a set dollar amount per person or per family member.
Age Limits: Many insurance policies set age limits for orthodontic benefits, sometimes only covering braces or Invisalign for patients under a certain age. Check with us if you’re unsure about how your plan applies.

Here to Help with Insurance Verification
Jolley Orthodontics accepts a wide variety of insurance plans. To streamline your visit, you can give us your insurance information over the phone or you can bring a copy of your insurance card to your first consultation—our team is more than happy to verify your coverage and explain any benefits during your initial smile analysis.

Using HSAs and FSAs
HSAs and FSAs are great options for covering orthodontic expenses with pre-tax dollars, helping reduce the out-of-pocket cost of treatment. Here’s a quick overview of how these accounts work with orthodontic treatment:

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs): HSAs allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars to use for eligible medical expenses, including braces and Invisalign. Unlike FSAs, HSA funds can roll over year to year, making them a flexible option for orthodontic treatment.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs): FSAs are similar but have a "use-it-or-lose-it" policy, meaning funds generally expire at the end of each year. Using FSA funds on orthodontic treatment can be a smart way to maximize your account before the year ends.

Whether you have an HSA or FSA, our team can help you understand how to use these accounts to cover treatment expenses.

Making Orthodontic Treatment Affordable
At Jolley Orthodontics, we want everyone to have access to a healthy, beautiful smile. Besides insurance and HSAs/FSAs, we offer flexible payment plans to make orthodontic care accessible and manageable:

Customized Payment Plans: Many patients find it helpful to spread the cost of treatment over several months or years. Our team offers in-house payment options with low or no interest, which can be tailored to your budget.
All-Inclusive Pricing: Ask about our all-inclusive pricing, which can cover your braces, aligner trays, regular adjustments, emergency visits, and retainers post-treatment.

Questions to Ask About Insurance
To ensure you feel comfortable and informed, consider asking the following questions before starting treatment:

What percentage of my treatment will my insurance cover?
Is there a lifetime maximum or age restriction for orthodontic benefits?
Do I need to visit an in-network orthodontist?
Can I use both my insurance benefits and HSA/FSA funds for my treatment?

We’re happy to answer these questions and clarify any insurance details. At your initial consultation, our treatment coordinators will go over your specific charges and fees, outlining what your insurance may cover and what your out-of-pocket expenses could be.
